Royal Academy of Dance (RAD)

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is a UK-based examination board specialising in dance education and training, with an emphasis on classical ballet. The RAD was founded in London, England in 1920 as the Association of Teachers of Operatic Dancing, and was granted a Royal Charter in 1935.

The RAD offers an internationally recognised portfolio of examination and assessments which is designed to motivate and encourage students of all ages and levels of ability, through systematic measurement of progress and attainment. RAD exams are recognition from world's largest ballet examination board and selected exams also carrying a UCAS tariff towards university admission.

Examinations are organised and administered by the RAD Examination Board. The RAD offers two examination syllabi, which are suitable for both male and female students.

Graded Syllabus

The Grades are : 

  • Pre-Primary in Dance

  • Primary in Dance

  • Grade 1 to 8

Vocational Graded Syllabus

 The Vocational Grades are :

  • Intermediate Foundation

  • Intermediate

  • Advanced Foundation

  • Advanced 1

  • Advanced 2

  • Solo Seal (*Must hold Advanced 2 with distinction)

Discovery Repertoire

The Levels are :

  • Level 2 - Unit Class, Unit Variation 1, Unit Variation 2​

  • Level 3 - Unit Class, Unit Variation 1, Unit Variation 2

  • Level 4 - Unit Class, Unit Variation 1, Unit Variation 2
